Should I Go Mirrorless?

I’m back finally. It has taken forever to get my laptop repaired. Glad that the episode has been over, so I should be blogging as normal again. Thanks for your patience. This photo was taken about 2 months back, featuring the façade of the surrounding buildings in Manchester’s Albert Square.

While waiting for my laptop to be repaired, I managed to reflect on my blog and equipment. It’s been 4 years since I got my Canon SX20 IS and now I want to upgrade it. I’ve read a lot about Mirrorless cameras: especially Micro Four Thirds format. These reports got me very excited about these types of cameras. However, I’ve also came across articles that suggest the Mirrorless market may not last. These reports only provide small pockets of the bigger picture about the camera market. Therefore, I would like to hear your views and experience on Mirrorless cameras.

Glad you're back blogging! Yay! I like the details in the photo. I've never heard of mirrorless cam. What does that mean? I guess I'll google it. I need a new camera. Would like a new camera. When I have money, I'll buy a new one. Welcome back to blogging! ;-)

In my opinion, Mirrorless cameras may replace the DSLR cameras in the long run. They are compact, have smaller form factor and usually much lighter. These attributes attracted me, as I will be able to have a good camera in my pocket wherever I go. Happy Smiley


For me, I think the next upgrade will be an entry to mid level DSLR camera. Of course the price will affect my decision too. Winking Smiley I'm saving up!

Haven't researched mirrorless cameras, but I would be afraid of the here today / gone tomorrow problem. You can lock up the mirror on a good DSLR and achieve the same thing. I'm really happy with my Cannon 5D Mark 2 that I bought used for a very reasonable price. I totally love shooting full-frame. The trade off is the inconvenience of size and weight of a full frame camera, but well worth it in my opinion.

I also used the SX20 IS and now use the Canon 7D. It looks like you do a lot of street photos. I have seen some beautiful stuff using mirrorless and four thirds format cameras. Another direction you might think about is the Canon SX50 HS. Several of the wildlife and landscape photographers I follow are wild about this camera. You can shoot both JPEG and RAW with it, and you also won't end up in an endless and costly quest for lenses. There may be a new version of it coming soon (SX60 HS?). Just a thought.

I love that beautiful architecture! They sure don't build them like that anymore! (Can't weigh in on your mirrorless camera conundrum, since I'm a lazy photographer who relies on my camera's auto feature being smarter than I am!) Very Happy Smiley
